Pulaski County Free Store is a community store

PCFS relies on teamwork and community support. Pulaski County is a place where neighbors care for one another, and we feel honored to be able to do our part to strengthen that tradition.

More than a store

PCFS is a mutual aid hub

The purpose of the Free Store is to incoporate mutual aid into the broader goals of social and environmental awareness. We strive to acheive this goal by encouraging everyone to make secondhand their first choice when shopping, providing a central location to distribute wanted and needed items, and by working with other local organizations to help ensure every person in Pulaski County can live a life of dignity. We are not a religious organization, so while we respect everyone's right to worship as they see fit, we will never ask you to participate in a religious service in order to volunteer or shop.

Frequently asked questions

Who can shop at the Free Store?

Everyone! While we prefer that shoppers live in the New River Valley, we at PCFS know that there is more than enough to go around. As long as we are all giving what we can, we'll all be able to take what we need.

What do I need to do to qualify as a shopper?

PCFS requires no preauthorization to shop. There is no paperwork, and no need to qualify. Just show up when we are open and get what you need and want. It's that easy.

How can I become a volunteer?

To attend a volunteer training and receive information about upcoming work dates, use the form on our Get Involved page to be added to our volunteer email list.

When are you open for shopping and donations?

The Free Store is open the first and third Sunday of each month from 12 p.m. - 3 p.m. During these hours everyone is free to shop and donate. We are not currently accepting donated items outside of these hours. We also maintain a community refrigerator that is outside and accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Food and drinks can be added to and taken from the outdoor fridge at any time.

What items do you accept?

Although we do not currently have a need for clothing, we accept all other items you typically find at thrift shops. This includes household items and decorations, small appliances like coffee makers and toasters, dishes, toys, personal care items, cleaning supplies, food, linens such as sheets and towels, along with many other items.

Some things we cannot accept are prescription medication, opened/expired over the counter medications, mattresses, baby furniture, medical equipment, and children's carseats.
